FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 2026
Milwaukee, WI — Milwaukee-based M.E. Dey & Co., a 119-year-old Customs Broker and Freight Forwarder, is proud to announce a planned leadership transition that reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to family ownership, innovation, and growth. This transition marks the continuation of the company’s legacy into its fifth generation of family leadership.
Current President Sandi Siegel will transition into the role of Chief Executive Officer, maintaining a minority ownership interest while continuing to provide strategic leadership and guidance for the organization. Family members Sarah Azar and Leah Gardenier have assumed majority ownership, representing the fifth generation of family stewardship and ensuring continuity of M.E. Dey’s values-driven approach to service and partnership.
Founded in Milwaukee in 1907 by Mae Elizabeth Dey, M.E. Dey & Co. has built a rich history in Wisconsin and beyond, helping businesses successfully import and export goods around the world for more than a century. The company’s longevity is rooted in adaptability, deep industry expertise, and a strong commitment to its customers and employees.
Siegel joined M.E. Dey in 1983 and represented the fourth generation of leadership alongside Robert Gardenier, former President and great-grandnephew of the company’s founder. Together, they led the business for more than 30 years, expanding its service offerings and geographic footprint. Following Gardenier’s retirement in 2019, Siegel was appointed President and has continued to guide the company through a period of industry change and growth.
As part of this transition, Sarah Azar will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer, moving from her most recent position as Executive Vice President. Azar joined M.E. Dey in 2012 as part of a long-term family succession plan. She has played a key role in developing the company’s internal operating systems and working closely with customers on automated solutions that enhance supply chain visibility. Azar holds a BA in Marketing and Leadership from the University of Minnesota and maintains both Certified Customs Specialist and Certified Export Specialist accreditations.
Leah Gardenier, daughter of Robert Gardenier and Sandi Siegel, also represents the fifth generation of family leadership. Having grown up working in the business through high school and college, she joined the company full-time after completing her BSBA with a supply chain major. She obtained her Customs Brokers License in 2021, and currently serves on M.E. Dey’s accounting team, where she has advanced into Internal Audits & Corporate Accounting, further strengthening the company’s operational and financial foundation.
In support of the company’s next phase of growth, the shareholders have appointed Dustin King as President of M.E. Dey & Co. King joined the organization in 2023 as Vice President of Strategic Development as part of Siegel’s succession planning efforts. He brings decades of industry leadership experience and a long-standing professional relationship with Siegel, having collaborated through a shared global freight network and advisory board service. King’s appointment reflects M.E. Dey’s commitment to combining experienced leadership with forward-looking strategy. He holds a B.A. in Economics and Management from Albion College, as well as a Certificate in Strategic Business Leadership from the University of Chicago.
Siegel says, “This transition is about honoring the family history while positioning M.E. Dey for the future. With fifth-generation family leadership, a strong executive team, and a continued focus on innovation and customer service, we are well prepared for continued growth in a rapidly evolving global trade environment.”
