Los Angeles/Long Beach
congestion worsens

Of the 46 containerships in port on Tuesday, September 8th, 22 were at anchor. Time to work vessels is now up to eight days. The delays have put strong pressure on the fixed-day weekly schedules to Los Angeles-Long Beach. To date, the lines have dropped Asian port calls to maintain schedules.

As reported by the Journal of Commerce, vessels are anchored as far south as Huntington Beach, about 15 miles south of the harbor. The PMA and ILWU, putting on a brave face, point to the ramping up of casual labor. 260 of the newly-hired longshoremen have been thrown into the fray this week with 250 new workers added each week for much of the fall.  Severe system capacity limitations cannot be answered by this single solution.

Both major railroad servicing these ports, UP and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, have placed limits on the number of containers they will move out of the ports to help address their own yard congestion.
